Air crash near Kathmandu, 16 killed, 2 missing, 1 rescued alive

25 Sep 2011
KATHMANDU, SEP 25 - A small plane carrying foreign tourists crashed in a hill near Chunedanda in Lalitpur early on Sunday, killing 16 people. The accident site lies near Bisankhunarayan VDC in the southern parts of the Kathmandu Valley.

An injured passenger and 16 dead bodies have been recovered from the site, according to SP Bhog Bahadur Thapa, who is overseeing rescue operations. The search for the missing two continues, he said.

In all, there were 19 people—mostly foreigners including some Indians—onboard the beech-craft. The ill-fated aircraft was reportedly approaching Kathmandu airport in cloudy weather after completing its mountain flight.

Captain JD Tamrakar was commandeering the aircraft, according to reports. Police moved rescue team to the site after they got a call from the locals near the crash site around 8 a.m.
